Commute by bike - how can you sit in a car, on a bus or in a train? Take control of your commute

How do you cycle to work when the weather is filthy? How can you face coming in with soaking wet gear and getting back into the same gear before cycling home? Do you not get tired of the bike? Does the bike not rust? You must have to clean the bike and wash your gear all the time? Is it not dangerous to cycle in the wet? I get asked these questions and more besides by my co-workers all the time. I respond by sitting out how bad the alternatives are.

Sitting in rush hour traffic in a car or waiting for a train, fighting for a seat (usually having to stand) and then walking home from the station and the brain melting experience of getting the bus are just not for me. I find all of the alternatives to the bike to be horrible; why? Because they take all of the control over your commute away from you. I have to feel like a caged animal and this is what all other forms of transport into work feel like.

On a bike, whatever the weather, you are in control. You know within a range of ten minutes or so what time you will get to work and home from work. You will not fall victim to unspeakable delays while standing at train stations, bus stops and sitting in traffic behind the latest crash.  On a bike you tip along and eventually get where you are going with little stress, no fanfare, no cost and, in my case, are rewarded with a hot shower. What’s not to like? The fact is, most people can think of many reasons not to cycle to work, but few factor in the positives. Take control of your commute by taking the bike.

If you don’t own one, then use the Bike to Work tax scheme to get yourself a decent bike and proper gear. After a couple of weeks of cycling have a look at yourself in the mirror. You will be thinner, happier and feel more in control of your life. You will feel freer as you can cycle many different routes rather than the same routes on public transport. Get on a bike and enjoy it. Rain or sunshine, the bike is the best option.
